Top 50 Influential Punk Rock Bands

Punk rock is a perfect example of how music can so powerfully reflect an artist’s freedom of expression. But what is punk and what classifies music to be punk? More than simply a musical genre, punk is an attitude; it represents an individual’s everyday struggle and his reaction to it.

Punk has used multiple costumes, hair styles, and distinctive sounds and has gone through many transformations. Great list! Unfortunately, I do have to agree with other when I say their are some missing bands here (i.e; The Casualties, G.B.H, etc.), but overall it's a good list, I do disagee with others though, when they say that Green Day should be here. Green Day definitely should *not* be on this list.

Not a bad list, personally I think Bad religion are number 1 though, they were around with black flag and are still around, their music hasn't changed and is really the basis for a lot of bands these days and transformed punk to what it is today.

Not sure how influential nofx, lagwagon and NUFAN are etc. But they are certainly great punk bands

    mpower08@hotmail.com
  • What about No Doubt?

    kdsabet@gmail.com

Bad list. Lagwagon? Total Chaos (Total Choads. DI more influential than Stiff Little Fingers. Pennywise above Circle Jerks. To much So Cal on here. And Green Day isn't punk. But either were the Sonics or the Stooges. Sorry.

  • Being a music fan amateur (especially punk music) I am going to carefully agree with the comments suggesting Green Day be on the list (somewhere in the top 50). My reasoning is that this is a list of the 'most influential punk rock bands.' Most amateur punk fans would easily confuse Green Day as punk music. I think a band as popular as Green Day which creates music even closely resembling Punk would have to be at least included in the top 50. I would refrain from suggesting this, b/c of my own ignorance, if the list was the top 50 BEST punk rock bands.

Overall, very interesting list... its gonna cost me on itunes for sure.

I agree with you and I admit I forgot the adicts but I will say that when you're trying to determine the 30 through 50 it's hard to figure who gets 50 and who gets 49.

    minordav3@gmail.com
  • You realize you can go on for days with the comments saying....

    "You forgot to add..."
    "You shouldn't have added...."

It is a pointless thing, the list is posted, move on.

how can you have this list and not include the causalities?

    randomlypointles@gmail.com
  • JEEP
the sex pistols are one of the worst things to happen to music let alone punk music. Putting them in the top five let alone on this list makes this list pointless. Yes Green Day and the Addicts should have made it. It realy seams like this list is comprised of bands that were/are "controversial". Probably was not written by someone who actualy likes music.

  • From Wikipedia's Listing of Punk Rock:

They created fast, hard-edged music, typically with short songs, stripped-down instrumentation, and often political, anti-establishment lyrics.

Now, if you guys want to argue who or who does not belong on this list, base your arguments on this.

    Great List.

  • Dave
Green Day is an alternative trendy band and anyone that thinks they should be on this list obviously has no idea about punk rock.

    minordav3@gmail.com
  • bostonboy
Agreed with grouch. A list without Green Day isn't "legit' it's just weak sauce. Cop out is right!

    bostonpjr@aol.com
  • grouchy
Using Green Day's cliche'd "too-pop-to-be-punk status" is such a cop-out. You're fooling yourself by saying they're not influential. And a good 1/4 of the bands you listed changed genres too, so if Green Day is now too pop, that's irrelevant. Besides, plenty of bands here have had substantial radio air time. Check your no. 3!

What about The Adicts? The Adicts should have been in the top 10 AT LEAST!
