How to drive in wet conditions

-

Driving in wet conditions is tough and complicated. Numerous accidents happen due to skidding and hydroplaning as cars lose grip. Sometimes, wet conditions make it tough for drivers to reach their desired location but it’s okay to be a bit late and drive slower than engaging in some uncertain situation.

Today, we will give you some useful tips which will help you drive better in rain.

Utilise ABS

The newer generation cars are equipped with an array of technological features including antilock braking systems. If your has the antilock braking system, don’t be shy of using these. The ABS system has also become fast and it can modulate the tyre grip accurately. It also maintains the stability control to keep the grip levels in check and assure road safety by preventing any sudden stops.

If your car has ABS, be gentle with the brakes. Don’t pull your feet back abruptly if you are pressing the brakes.

Keep an eye on other fluids

Rainwater is not the only culprit. When it starts to rain, other fluids such as oil, diesel and grease get a chance to float on the surface of the water. And, these can cause the tyres to lose grip. Usually, these fluids can be noticed. So, if you feel like that fluid is split on the road, try switching your lane. Or, at least slow down your car.

Keep your lights on

When your headlights and taillights are on, it is easier for the driver behind you to notice your car. And, it can save you from a lot of uncertainties and accidents.

Don’t use cruise control

Cruise control is not for driving in wet conditions. Cruise control is automated and all the decisions are made by the computer. The computer cannot see the water ahead. So, if there is a puddle of rainwater ahead, cruise control won’t slow down the car. And, your car will pass through the puddle at the same speed. If this happens, the chances of hydroplaning are extremely high.

It is not a good idea to use cruise control when the conditions are wet. So, drive the car yourself and keep things under control.

Don’t drive at a high speed

Driving at high speed causes major accidents. Since the roads are filled with water, the chances of hydroplaning are sky-high. When the roads are wet, it takes 3x more time for the car to stop. So, be sensible and keep the speed of your car under 30 mph.

Also, try to keep a considerable distance between your car and the car in front of you.

Recover from Hydroplaning and Skids

Don’t be afraid of hydroplaning and skids. It probable that your car will start to skid at a point, especially if your tyres are old or they have low tread depth. Tyres are also very important when you are driving in wet conditions and we have described the importance later in the blog.

When your car starts hydroplaning, you need to be sensible and gentle. Don’t push the brakes too hard. Don’t panic. Use the ABS system to stop your car or to regain traction. If your car does not have ABS, then try pushing the brakes gentling and move your steering towards the vacant area. You should drive slow so even if it skids, your car can stop without engaging in an accident.

Tires

When you are driving in rain, the tread of your tyre plays an important role. It channels the water out of the way and grips the road perfectly. But if the tread depth of your tyre is low, your car will find it difficult to maintain traction. Having high-quality tyres is essential to reduce the chances of hydroplaning.

If your tyres are old, we will recommend you to buy car tyres Dubai. Both all-season tyres and summer tyres perform well in wet conditions. The tread pattern in these tyres resists against hydroplaning and also provides high-mileage.
