My daughter was a little confused when I mentioned omdöme void. She had never heard of it. I said it is a word in Swedish that means ‘empty’. ‘To void is a word in Swedish used to describe the emptiness inside of a person which is empty of meaning.” I then proceeded to explain that omdöme void is a common thing when someone loses their sense of self-worth.
This one had me even more confused. I knew it means empty, but I had no idea what it meant. My daughter seemed to look at it as if it was an empty thing.
To say that someone is empty of meaning is to say that they have nothing that they can call their own. To void is a common phrase when someone is talking about where they want to be in life and what they hope to accomplish.
void is the opposite of full, which is one of the greatest questions we ask ourselves as we look at life. It’s one of those questions that seems to be a lot more complex than it actually is (though I suppose it also seems a lot more difficult to answer), and it can mean a lot of different things. For example, someone who has no sense of self-worth might call themselves void of meaning.
That kind of void can also be said of someone who lacks self-knowledge. For example someone who is a psychopath who has no empathy for others. Or someone who is a bully who has no sense of justice. Or someone who is a narcissist who has no self-esteem. Or someone who is a psychopathic abuser who has no morals. Or someone who is a sociopath who has no self-worth.
This is what omdöme void means for me. Omdöme void can mean that someone has no self-awareness. That someone is void of self-worth. That someone is void of empathy. That someone has no self-knowledge. That someone is void of morality. That someone is void of morality. That someone is void of morality… and we’re not even sure how to begin to talk about this.
For instance, I have been seeing some people who seem to believe they are in the ‘right’ group, but who are not at all. I am in the ‘right’ group. But I can’t for the life of me figure out why. And I don’t know what to do about it. I don’t want to be part of the “right” group. But I can’t help but want to believe that I am.
People like to believe they are in the right group, because that’s where everything that happens in their lives fits and they can be part of the right group. But if that’s the case then why not just give them the answers they are looking for, instead of just giving them the answers they already are looking for. If we want to talk about morality, we have to start talking about self-knowledge. That is the real problem with people who think they are in the right group.
omdöme void is actually one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time. The story of a group of people who are all searching for the same truth is beautiful and sad at the same time. I think it works better with a soundtrack than with a narrative.
